Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Wendy battled drug addiction for 15 years but has been in recovery for a remarkable 22 years. During her addiction, she experienced periods of homelessness, residing in shelters in Chattanooga and Atlanta. After turning her life around, she dedicated herself to helping others on their journey to sobriety.
Before embarking on her retirement journey she dedicated more than three decades to the medical field.
For 15 years, Wendy was a Coordinator for House of Refuse, a men’s transitional program.
She successfully advocated for residents to secure SSI benefits and provided spiritual guidance by teaching 12-step biblical classes.
For four years, she worked with the Regeneration Transitional Program for women.
She supported women in accessing the resources they needed and continued her 12-step biblical classes.
Throughout her journey, Wendy has been a dedicated advocate for the homeless, particularly in securing SSI benefits, providing transportation to medical appointments, and ensuring access to essential resources for women in her local community.
Wendy is wholeheartedly pursuing her passion for Sociology as a student at Chattanooga State. She proudly holds the title of a global scholar student at Chattanooga State and is on track to complete her program in 2024. She intends to continue her academic pursuit in Sociology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), where she aims to earn a bachelor’s degree.
Married since 1976, James, who hails from Gadsden, Alabama, is also in recovery. Together, they actively support the Vision of Mercy Ministry, a charitable organization focused on addressing the needs of the homeless in their community. Wendy has been an invaluable partner in this mission, lending her unwavering support to help those less fortunate. They are members attending Redemption to the Nations Church in Chattanoooga.
Wendy is actively engaged in the community and holds membership in the NAACP of Chattanooga. She is a member of Greater Chattanooga United Way, Mission Increase Non-Profit Resource, and the Tennessee Non-profit Network.
She believes, “If you can be great, help someone else become great!”
